For many of us, a great deal of time is spent in the home, especially for those who work remotely. With this, it’s essential that spaces within a home are approached from a sense of wellness, peace and a lightness of living as it will transform rooms into areas of harmony. Here are some tips on how to make that transformation possible and change the overall in-home experience.
Understand the Space
Before any kind of design decisions are made, really think through the actual function of the space and the ways in which it might currently feel disjointed. Is the space meant to be a spot that requires focus and action, as in a home office? Or perhaps it is designed to be a place to de-stress and enjoy calm, such as in a living room? Always consider function first – otherwise, you may be incorporating design elements that point away from a sense of harmony.
Use Colors as a Guide
When you enter the space you are looking to reassess, think about the colors currently used. In general, what colors speak to you? Are deeper shades overwhelming, or perhaps they are desirably grounding? Are light colors uplifting, or do they lack the spatial intensity that you enjoy? The colors you choose to incorporate – and how, such as accents vs. a monochromatic theme from wall to wall – will set the stage for a calming lightness and are important to take into account before diving in further.
There’s Power in Symmetry
There is nothing like symmetry to bring about balance that can be incredibly calming, which lends itself to light living. Naturally, as humans, we take comfort in visual symmetry, so think about ways to incorporate it into the space. Achieving even some semblance of symmetry doesn’t have to be difficult – beginning with end tables on either side of a bed is a great start, or tapping into the use of curtains or drapes can also put you on the right path. Additionally, utilizing identical mirrors in the same placement will get things moving.
Embrace Negative Space
You’ve likely heard the phrase “less is more”. This same mentality can also apply when working to achieve harmony within a space. The eye often enjoys a visual sense of decluttering and offers the opportunity to really enjoy the pieces that define the room. This is not to say that negative space should be pursued across the board, as every space is different, including their function, so pursue negative space only if it makes sense.
Sprinkle in Pieces of Joy
Whether it be pictures of loved ones, keepsakes from memorable trips, etc., utilizing pieces that carry real meaning are an excellent way to establish harmony and lightness of living in a space. As you walk throughout the room, recognizing the pieces and the joy they bring will establish a calming happiness fully unique when compared to other methods. However, be careful of overdoing it – while instruments of joy are very effective, too many of these items can throw off balance, so make sure to be discerning in your selection.
Lighting is Key
When assessing a space to identify opportunities to establish harmony, as well as thinking about the mood you are trying to achieve, the integration of lighting is a big factor. There are so many options available and in wide variation, from classic chandeliers to subtle minimalist sconces, that will tie all elements of the room together and will likely be one of the first things a person notices when they walk in. Don’t be afraid to put investment into the right lighting. When harmony is achieved, you’ll be glad you did.
Ultimately, harmony and the lightness of living is incredibly subjective, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Give yourself some grace as you try different interior design elements and see what works best for you. With a little bit of trial and error, establishing that sense of peace is well on the horizon. And don’t forget to enjoy the process!
